Senior Ruby on Rails Developer

Page
Full-time
Remote
Canada, Canada

We’re looking for an experienced (senior-plus level) Ruby on Rails developer to join our team. Our team is small, deeply experienced, and based in Canada. We’re building government relations software that helps our customers keep tabs on governments for what they care about, in real-time. Practically this means ingesting large amounts of data, real-time processing in video/audio/text pipelines, and working with generative AI (LLMs) to produce actionable insights for our customers. Due to the real-time nature, there are some incredibly interesting technical challenges we work with on a daily basis.

Page is reinventing and disrupting External Affairs for large enterprises. Government relations, public relations, and regulatory affairs generate a deluge of data no human team can effectively consume. Critical risks and opportunities are missed, with major consequences. Page changes that. Our AI-powered platform captures what matters in real time, equipping enterprises with the data and tools to act decisively and influence outcomes with stakeholders.

This would be our 7th hire, so naturally we’re looking for someone passionate, energetic, and truly exceptional. At this stage you will have a massive role in shaping the product. We have a strong belief that working with extremely talented people is one of life’s great joys (afterall, work is a big part of your life!). We want you to enjoy turning on the computer every day. We believe in small teams, shipping often, with low process.

You’ll be a great fit if…

  • You can ship fast, independently. There is limited oversight, we expect you to be largely autonomous and own your work end-to-end.
  • You’ve shipped large scale Rails apps to production.
  • You’re open to working with the right technologies for the job. Although most of our work is on our main Rails app, we also have a Python based service that powers various ML based stuff. This is a role where you will own a significant part of the stack. No frontend/backend teams. For our main Rails monolith our stack is Tailwind, Stimulus, and Hotwire (very backend friendly). We keep it simple and try to stick to Rails defaults as much as possible – we don’t use React.
  • You care about what you ship. This isn’t a ship-and-forget role. The quality of our product is on each and every person. We expect you to exercise extreme ownership over everything you do.
  • You’re customer obsessed. We like feedback, a lot. We don’t ship in isolation.

Nice to have:

  • You’ve shipped stuff to production that uses LLMs
  • You’ve dealt with scraping/ingesting large amounts of data

This won’t be the right role if:

  • You’ve never worked with Ruby on Rails or Python. We’re looking for someone with experience with at-least one commercially large-scale application built in Rails OR Python – previous experience with both isn’t required.
  • You need process/structure. The biggest lever we have as a startup is speed to market. This means shipping fast and shipping often.

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary, equity, + benefits. We believe when the company is successful everyone is successful.
  • Work with cutting edge technology.
  • Team offsites (when it makes sense) to hack together in person!
  • Work with a very small experienced team (we’re all ex-Shopify/Wealthsimple)
  • Very few meetings
  • Great work life balance. While we ship fast, it’s never at the expense of personal life.

Interview process:

  • We’re not fans of leetcode. We prefer practical experience/problems.
  • Interview stages:
    • Quick call with our CTO to see if it’s good fit
    • Meet with member of the team for a pair programming interview
    • Depending on the results of that, possibly another to calibrate
    • Final 15m call to review // offer or reject stage

Right now we’re focused on hiring in Canada – but for the right candidate we can be flexible.
