Background

Kolide (by 1Password) is building device trust software for companies that value  Honest Security. With over 450 customers and a novel approach to solving security and compliance concerns, Kolide is growing quickly and poised to take an industry-leading role in the coming years. To prepare, we are looking to responsibly grow our team in order to increase our diverse set of skills and perspectives. We are part of 1Password, a remote first company, and you can work from anywhere in the US or Canada as long as you can commit to our business hours of 9am - 5pm Eastern.

About The Job

Kolide is looking for a Senior Developer (Rails) to be the inaugural member of our Internal Tools team. While Kolide employs other programming languages for our endpoint agent— our device server, customer-facing APIs, and customer-facing UI, are all proudly written in a single majestic monolithic Rails 7 codebase.
The Senior Developer for the Internal Tools team will enable our internal customers (Customer Success, Billing, Marketing, Sales, and all the other engineering teams) to work more efficiently. You will assist on the front lines, solving issues small and large as they pop up across our customer base, as well as developing new internal tools that everyone can use to self-service common needs in the future. While you’ll be working independently, you’ll never be alone and without help: none of our teams operate in isolation. Instead, your teammates are available to collaborate with at any stage of the process and in a manner that best suits your individual needs.
Some recent problems that have been solved by our Rails team include:
  • Adding additional query filtering to new API endpoints to pull the authentication status of specific devices, rather than needing to pull the entirety of the organization
  • Identifying and resolving a complex bug caused by the addition of a new authentication status, which had resulted in users receiving notifications immediately rather than in accordance with the configured grace period
  • Building new self-service functionality into the admin UI that allowed for users to programmatically adjust an Authentication Policy Rule in Okta via API
  • Exposing information from numerous third party systems in a central location inside our staff tools to save people’s time.
  • Cross-evaluating logs from a customer endpoint, GCP, and Kolide’s proprietary systems to determine the cause of a problem a VIP user was experiencing in device verification during authentication.
  • Building a status monitoring system for our data ingestion and authentication event system so that we can quickly evaluate new software releases have not caused problems for our users before they notice them.
Additionally, Kolide embraces the simplicity of server-side rendering and heavily leverages the new Hotwire library to add the reactivity of modern webapps. We don’t have any features that require React or similar frameworks.

Much of the Rails work involves processing, augmenting, and visualizing data that we receive from endpoints. As a result, you will be collaborating closely with endpoint engineers as well as other Rails developers.

We love Rails and often are the first adopters of new libraries and frameworks in that ecosystem. As an early adopter of these technologies, you’ll have opportunities at Kolide to directly contribute to these open source projects in meaningful ways.

About You

We are looking for candidates who have at least 5 years experience building SaaS products in Ruby on Rails. You should be comfortable with engineering in the entire stack including writing HTML, CSS, Javascript, and a good understanding of HTTP.
You should like writing, reading, and working with SQL. All of the queries we send to the endpoint are written in SQLite and understanding concepts like CTEs, casting, and aggregations will help you decipher the more complex queries we send down to customer devices.

You have some affinity for Security and IT. It’s even better if you’ve held an IT support or end-user facing security role. Much of our work involves taking complex security and endpoint concepts and distilling them down into words and visuals end-users can understand.

You should have curiosity and patience. The problems you will be solving are often poorly defined and you will need to do research and ask questions. You should enjoy digging into a problem and getting satisfaction once you figure it out.

You are a good writer who can write prose with empathy and have tolerance for less technical people. As a product that interacts directly with our customers' end-users, it helps when our engineers can contribute to the documentation process.

You are able to drive projects to completion, to communicate complex situations in a way that can be understood by our Support team and re-communicated back out to customers, and are proactive about finding the right answer.

You have experience building apps that scale. At Kolide, this means citing relevant prior experience when a fellow engineer’s pull request might be doing something dangerous like adding an index that might lock a table, or introducing a N+1 query in a high throughput request path. When things get slow in production, you know a few common places to look to understand where a bottleneck may be occuring.

You could be a self-taught high-school graduate, or you could hold a masters in Computer Science and Engineering. It doesn’t matter to us, as long as you meet the criteria.
